Acne

What causes Acne and what treatments are available?

Acne has 4 main causative factors – increased sebum production by the pilosebaceous glands, increased skin cells (keratinocytes) blocking the gland ducts, P.acnes colonisation and resultant inflammation of the glands.

Dr John Stretch developed a special interest in acne while undertaking his Post Graduate Diploma in Dermatology (Cardiff University, UK) in 2007 and subsequently completed the Certificate in Acne Management held jointly by Cardiff University and The Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australia in 2010. He understands that acne is not just a cosmetic concern but can be a debilitating condition causing anxiety and depression.

While there are many acne treatments available, the most effective ones (both topical and oral) are available on prescription and can only be prescribed by doctors. There are also different treatment plans depending on the severity of the condition and the personal circumstances of the patient. Of paramount importance is the early control of the condition and prevention of scarring. However, an effective maintenance regimen to prevent recurrence is also essential.
